Controversial Movie “The Accidental Prime Minister” in Legal Trouble; Accused of Depicting Top Public Figures in Bad Light

The controversial movie “The Accidental Prime Minister” is stealing all the limelight with its striking plot portraying the reign of former Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh from 2004 to 2014 under the United Progressive Alliance along with several other prominent leaders.

Recently, on Wednesday, a petition has been moved in a Bihar court, creating legal troubles for the film prior to its release scheduled for January 11, alleging that the film showcases various public figures in a bad light and hampers their image.

The petition has been moved by Advocate Sudhir Kumar Ojha in a Muzaffarpur Chief Judicial Magistrate Court, against the star cast of the movie including actor Anupam Kher, impersonating former economist and PM of India, Akshay Khanna, depicting noted journalist Sanjay Baru–a media advisor to the ex-PM and on whose controversial book the film is said to be based and several others alongside the Director and Producer of the film.

Accusing the biopic of ‘hurting’ his sentiments and an insult towards top public figures of our country, the petitioner moved a petition under Sections 295, 153, 153A , 293, 504 and 120B relating to promoting enmity between different groups, sale of obscene objects, insult with intent to provoke breach of peace and criminal conspiracy of IPC.

Besides the UPA leaders, the petition claims that the film exposes the country and its political leaders, ranging from RJD Chief Lalu Prasad and BSP Chief Mayawati to former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and his deputy Lal Krishna Advani, in a very bad light.

Manmohan Singh’s media advisor Pankaj Pachauri along with several other Congress leaders have objected to the movie arguing that the film is nothing but BJP’s election campaign strategy and an attempt to hamper their image ahead of 2019 elections.

The court has admitted the case and posted the matter for January 8 to hear the case in Sub Divisional Judicial Magistrate court (West) of Gaurab Kamal.
