In Another Move Towards Justice, Court Orders 20 Years of Rigorous Imprisonment to Priest for Rape of a Minor Girl

Thalassery: On Saturday, February 16, the Thalassery POCSO Court ordered 20 years of rigorous imprisonment to former priest Robin Vadakkancheril alias Mathew Vadakkancheril for the rape of a minor girl from Kottiyor in Kannur District.

The priest was found guilty under Section 3(a) r/w section 4, section 5(f) and section 5(j) ii r/w section 6 of POCSO Act and section 376 (2) of IPC, he has been awarded 20 years each in all the sections, which is meant to be run concurrently. Moreover, the Court has also imposed a fine of Rs. 1 Lakh.

The matter pertains to the rape of a minor girl in 2016, wherein the priest along with 6 others was accused of the crime. Subsequently, in 2017, the victim delivered a baby at the Christu Raj Hospital run by the Church, where Robin Vadakkancheril was the priest. Although the key accused has been sentenced to jail, the remaining 6 co-accused were acquitted.
